A gifted creative director
Cathy Compton grew up in Ames, Iowa where she earned her Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Iowa State University. As part of her K-12 teacher certification, she taught elementary school in Rosendal, Norway for several months, introducing American folk music to students and learning about Norwegian folk traditions.
Cathy completed her Master of Music degree at CU-Boulder in Voice Performance and Pedagogy while simultaneously pursuing an interest in Arts Administration as the Marketing Assistant with CU Presents and an internship with the Colorado Music Festival. She has also worked as an education intern with the Metropolitan Opera Guild in New York City. At CU Cathy was the recipient of the Berton Coffin scholarship in voice and sang with CU Opera and the Opera Theater Singers.
A passion for exploring the mind-body connection of singing led Cathy to studies in Alexander Technique, and she served as the Graduate Assistant for the Musicians’ Wellness Initiative at CU. Her Masters Thesis is entitled “Voice and the Alexander Technique.” After completing her Masters degree, Cathy moved to Leipzig, Germany where she studied the songs of composer Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel through a Fulbright fellowship. In Leipzig Cathy performed solo recitals in the Mendelssohn House Museum, sang the role of Carmen Ghia in the Leipzig Bach Festival’s production of The Stoned Guest by PDQ Bach, and was the soprano soloist in a Mother’s Day Gala Concert in the renowned Gewandhaus zu Leipzig. She also performed in Berlin at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt and the Universität der Künste.
Cathy is happy to be back in Boulder helping to develop and manage courses and special events at the Off-Broadway School of Fine Arts.
